This is a picture of a pine tree....or more accurately, HALF a pine tree, between my house and the house behind mine. Note how the top half of said pine tree is now lying atop his roof.
No idea how much damage that did.
Three years ago, I had four similar pine trees on the corners of my house. Two years ago, one of them got blown down in a winter ice storm. It fell between my house and the house of my neighbor, causing no damage to either one.
I realized that I had been very, very, very lucky, and my days were numbered. The other three trees would have to go. The sooner the better.
Two years later, they were still there, and I was dreading the next big storm.
Then last April my neighbor had some tree work done. They came over and made me an offer to have the three trees removed. The offer was about half what I had gotten as estimates before.
I went and told my wife. She said, "No, too high." I went back and gave the guy the bad news.
He lowered his price. I went and told my wife. "No, too high."
He lowered it again. He would now take out three trees for LESS than the price of removing one, according to three estimates I had gotten before two years previous. I had watched them work. They knew what they were doing. This was the second time my neighbor had hired them. The heck with my wife. I said yes. The trees were gone that afternoon, and the wood stacked right where the trees used to be.
My wife would not talk to me for a week she was so upset with me. How dare I make that decision without her. I went into a deep depression for several days. We had the wood removed by a friend who collects firewood a day later.
Fast forward to last Friday. HUGE storm comes through. Trees snapped in half and ending up on roofs. Healthy trees have whole limbs broken off, landing on cars and houses.
And I have no trees to get blown down.
So, Saturday, I show my wife this house, and she says, "Oh, my god..."
I remark, "Wow...GOOD THING WE HAD THOSE TREES REMOVED, HUH??"
She said not a word.

No, she was in agreement with me on that. The trees had to go. She just thought the price was too high. She never bothered to get estimates before. I did. I told her how much those were. Compared to the original estimates, I was getting a bargain.
My wife's track record in hiring people to do work has been poor at best. She can usually get a really cheap price. They usually do really cheap work that has to be redone.
I simply don't trust her judgement in selecting contractors anymore.

Oh, I think she realizes that.
Now I'm struggling to get her to let me handle the details of the repairs. She thinks she can do it better. I disagree, not with her track record.
My philosophy in this regard is to let the insurance company select the contractors and get the work done. I will be on the insurance company to get it done as quickly as possible (that job begins Thursday) but leave the details of what needs to be done to the insurance company and the contractors. If I starts trying to tell the contractors what to do, I could end up having to pay for stuff the insurance company did not feel was necessary.
The biggest "if" right now is the carpet in that room. If they can get the stains out (and I'm not about to tell them what stains came from the insulation and which did not) it will not be replaced. If they can't... I get a new carpet in there.

My parents had the same fight about 20 years ago when they bought their house in Texas.
My dad had someone chop down about 5 pine trees surrounding the house and my mom was soo pissed when she saw the stumps. But seeing neighbors houses with trees downed on them over the years after bad storms made me glad he did it.

Then my wife comes home today and wants to know why the pile of debris (that used to be all over the back, but now is on the patio) hasn't been disposed of.
Good God, woman, in a few days, we're going to have the entire ROOF removed and strewn all over the lawn, and you're worried about a pile of debris now??

You know, the first thing I thought when I heard that the storm trashed your roof was, "Thank goodness he got those trees removed earlier this year." I remember you telling me how they were starting to weaken, and I'm certain if they weren't taken care of by the contractors, the storm would have done so with far more disastrous results.
