A good short story, which distance from the subject allows for the story to take hold.
Interesting perspective, does a bluefairy come to answer his wishes?

The voices are the spirits that dwelled in the tree, and prior to that once lived where he does now.

That was something I definitely could have addressed/touched on a bit, rather than leaving it open as you mentioned.
