I'm in a Pac-Man mood lately. That might not come as a surprise to most of you, but to be perfectly honest, I am not always this way. Something has triggered a resurge in my unhealthy obsession. Was it a butteryfly flapping its dusty wings thousands of miles away? Perhaps the planets have aligned just so, sparking some deep memories in my brain which sent me into nostalgic fits. I can never explain it.
Regardless of what spurred it, I'm going to take advantage of this by drawing Pac-Man character to try and get my art groove back. The first victim was Blinky, the red ghost. I did something a little different with this.
For those not familiar with it, there was once a Pac-Man cartoon. It was short lived, as most video game shows tend to be, but it had its subtle charm. An interesting character trait Hanna-Barbara gave to the ghosts in this show was hats. Each ghosts (aside from Sue, the purple one) had a different hat and a different personality. Some Pac-Man fanatics consider the show a bastardization mainly because they messed up the personalities. Blinky has always been the leader of the ghosts in the games, but in the show he was nothing more than a lackey. Clyde, the slow, stupid creature on video screens, was turned into the Moe-like leader of the gang. What made it even worse is that Pinky was turned into a male, and given a deep manly voice.
That aside, I like the hats. They're fun, and give the ghosts some extra personality. So I decided to combine the current style of the Pac-Man ghosts with their characteristics from the cartoon. I plan to draw the rest of them slowly. I hope they all turn out as well as this one did.
