Yeah... kinda funny ya don't like the wlittle Sonic/Alien guy, 'cause on the opposite side of the spectrum there are those who totally luv him, me I couldn't careless... like I said, it's all way old and in reality wasn't put up to be crited (hell non of my stuff is :P) it's just there to be seen and enjoyed by those who can enjoy it... I mean if ya don't like it... why tell me? It's not like I'm gonna pick up a few tips on being crited on a piece that's at least 6-7 years old, I've come a long way since then and while others may not see it... I certainly can XD.
lol so much for being concise :P

Actually my comment was more about your text bubble comment.
My serious comments (not critiques) tend to have a + and a - mentioned in them just for the sake of balance.
But different folks have different tastes, don't worry about it.
And if you couldn't care less why are you getting all bent out of shape about it?
If I went into a paragraph long exposition on it I could understand, but it's barely a blurb there...
On the "old" note, I'm not critiquing anything. Though I can't say as I really see any difference either, as long as you can that's fantastic, means you'll keep getting better, which is amazing considering how kick-ass you are already!

Yeah... I'm pretty familiar with the "reward and bash" tactics of a critic (which is why I usually don't like it, whether it be aimed at my stuff or others) but being self taught will usually have that effect on ya.
Anyways, like I said "so much for being concise" (wasn't planning on such a long response), my point was more that... why say anything negative, at all! (especially to an old piece like that) it's like saying, yeah that's great and all... but why not make it blue or something? I mean what kind of a response are you looking for by telling me that?
You say it's just a "blurb" and therefore didn't merit such a response. I think your words have more importance than you know/realise and certainly more weight with me as you are a regular on my gallery (which is certainly appreciated... and how). In the end does the length of a negative comment make it any less impactfull? IMO it certainly doesn't and did I really seem "bent out of shape" in my response, seriously sorry if I did... I'm pretty unskilled, when it comes to social graces, I mean the last thing I wanna do is be flaming my own buddies XD
So I apologize if it seemed over bearing and totally uncalled for, was really not my intention and of course thanks for the support you do give, it's always appreciated ^^

Nah nah, the problem here was I didn't realize that that was an alternate Sonic, so my mind was in another area altogether.
Furthermore, i think the part we're having a misunderstanding with is my comment of "i don't like". Now, you have to understand I've been in a lot of critiques and am trying to write a handbook on it.
And in my experience, the phrases "i like" or "i don't like" are not critical comments on any level because they offer no useful information at all.
That's what I meant when I said I wasn't critiquing anythihng.
You ask, why say anything negative, well by that same token, why say anything positive. Both are equally useless to you at this point. Also, remember just because someone says "i don't like -insert-" does NOT mean in ANY way (by itself) that the peice is BAD or lacks merit.
NOTHING about what I've seen in your work is BAD. AT ALL!
I wasn't looking for ANY response, it was more like a "thinking out loud" moment. But you've got to be able to look through ALL comments you receive of ANY kind for any useful information that actually pertains to your piece and NOT just personal preference or ignorance on the viewers part. Like in this case, I was ignorant to the fact it WASN'T Sonic.

Hehehe... yeah I get the whole misunderstanding thing now and that was pretty much my fault, due to a lack of info, omitted by myself, my bad... sorry ^_^, however it appears you and I obviously have very different views of what makes a remark/comment criticism, for me the length or descriptiveness has little to no import, in making a string of words criticism, hell all comments aimed at a piece of art is criticism, it's either positive or negative, + or - and a comment like "I'm not sure how much I like this alien-esque look Sonic has..." is certainly not positive.
kinda like a game reviewer saying "I'm not too sure about Mario's new look" That certainly ain't positive, that's hella negative... if I was a character designer (which in RL is like my fav thing) I'd be like "oh sh*t! What the heck is wrong with him, maybe I need to change this or perhaps that?" lol and someone saying holy sh*t! I f*ckin' luv this character" is criticism too, the only dif is... it's positive and would let the artist know he did good. Criticism mealy means critical comments or judgment (so critical is simply something of import/urgency and a comment or judgment can be good or bad) So really it's nothing more than comments which have import, be it good or bad, don't believe me? Look it up.
So yeah, while you believe your few words wasn't criticism, the reality is that they were indeed and at this point that's all I'm pointing out, as there's nothing much to say on the comment itself as it was nothing more than a simple miss understanding. Anyways, that's me done on the matter... and how! ^^

It seems like the problem is that you don't seem to be seperating the validity of the commenters. If you treat all comments with equal validity then yes, I can see how you would think this. But the "reality" of the situation is that NOT all people or their opinions are equal. And you should not treat them with the same relevance, and a lot you should throw away outright.
Any reviewer can make a personal statement like "Sonic sucks" but if that's just cuz they don't like that game doesn't make the game BAD. And if 100 other people say "Sonic Rocks!" then shouldn't the count outweigh 100 - 1 or are you looking at it as 1-1 based on the variety of comments?

If you wanna get technical, here ya go, I looked it up. This is one of the problems with the English language, it has many words that are spelled the same that have different meanings based on the context in which they are used. The "import/urgency" definition is not appropriate to this situation.
It would be nice if I could take all the positive comments I get all the time and just be happy with them, but I'm not. Hearing hundreds of people say "you rock and that's hot" all the time is nice but not very useful. Also a lot of these comments are comming from non-artists or people of lesser skill, so they're opinions and comments are not as weighty.
As an artist I/you/we have to deal with positive and negative comments and critiques all the time. But you have to learn how to deal with them. And if you're approaching it from a black&white angle of it's either positive or negative, then you're going to have a hard time. A lot, if not all of the most useful comments you get come from those words you just defined as "negative".
I mean, you wouldn't take some elementary school kids snotty comment of "Sonic's gay! That picture's ugly!" and put it equal to your own in validity would you? I hope you wouldn't!
