What I love most about this piece is the sheer amount of emotion conveyed through the clever use of colour, style, position and symbolism.
The ghetto-like surroundings shows the destruction and hopelessness of the people's dream of a socialist paradise. The buildings, the streets, and the looks of apathy and disillusionment on the people, especially considering that a fight is about to take place symbolizes the moral, social and economical decay. The people have been fed false hopes and lies, and because of that, they no longer seem to care about anything around them. It shows the feelings of powerlessness that comes with frustrated expectations.
The big advertisement billboard in the background, a proverbial "bright star" amongst all the decay stands in stark contrast to everything that's going on. The fact it is displayed so prominently above everyone and between the fighters, as if it were surveying the scene like an imposing monarch could perhaps be said to symbolize the seeming omnipresence and inability to escape from capitalism and consumerism; the same two things that landed them where they are in the first place. It is their metaphorical ball and chain to this miserable existence, it shows that they are all under its yoke, no matter their status, no matter their size or wit.
The blue pants WarHorse wears and the red beret on the other horse's head is also symbolic. Red and blue are colors that are often paired together. They are both primary colors; red is a warm color, while blue is a cool color. Blue and red are the the colors of the two opposing political parties in the United States. Perhaps it symbolizes the conflict between the political parties in the country, and the equines' belligerence towards one another without seeming to notice their surroundings could represent the continued bickering and fighting between the Republicans and Democrats while being oblivious to the state of the country.
All in all, Galen, this is a fantastic piece packed full of deeper meaning once you think about it. In my honest opinion, it is one of your best works yet.! I give it a 10 out of 10!
