I haven't delved into poetry for quite a few years, so this is somewhat rough around the edges. It didn't turn out quite as sharp as I'd hoped, so I'd love some feedback and ConCrit, particularly ways I could shorten it, so pointing out lines that aren't needed or aren't as well written as the rest would be fantastic!
The overall concept I'm going for is an attack on condescending, bleeding-heart middle class values (to which I in part belong to) with the major theme being: We only care about the suffering of others because it makes US feel better for caring. We are ashamed or feel guilty if we don't do anything, so we expend the least amount of effort we can to assure ourselves we're in fact good people.
More important than anything else, please tell me whether or not you understood that message within the poem.
Thanks in advance!
