One thing that I think will help with these pieces is to use sillicone sealant(the stuff you'd use for aquariums) for the top portion instead of hot glue. It will be less messy to work with, you can smooth it and thin it out in areas, and give a cleaner look to the top of the gravel. Sillicone sealant, if put on thin enough dries relatively clear and would only really be noticeable in thick areas.
