This was supposed to be a simple little picture of Megan, but I asked Oli for a little something to give it a sort of Wonderland feel, and boy did she deliver!
I've always loved the idea of stepping through a magic mirror, or the back of an old, forgotten world, and finding myself in a magical land on the other side. I grew up on those stories, mostly the Alice books and as many of the Narnia books as I could get through, and I suppose it's just an idea that has stuck with me into my adulthood. Those stories were as much an influence on my own stories as anything by Peter Beagle or Tolkien, and while those sorts of adventures mostly happen to children, I'd still go in a heartbeat if I were given the chance.
The shifting clothes, and the design for Megan's fantasy outfit were all Oli's idea, so she gets full credit there. By happy chance, however, green and brown are Oseille's colors, so they suit her perfectly.

Oh, awesome! I know you could do a really beautiful job on a picture on this sort of theme, and it'll be really interesting to see what you come up with. I know what you mean about being inspired, too. Suddenly, I want to write a little story around what she finds on the other side here.
Oh, isn't it? Oli really outdid herself on this, considering it was just supposed to be a quick little picture, and I absolutely love her portrayal of the whole concept to bits. She mentioned wanting to do a more complete picture on this same theme sometime, too, so I'm definitely going to have to look into that!
Aw *Snuggles* You're too sweet. But it's definitely an instant favorite of mine, too. Oli did an amazing job on Megan, and her outfit, and the world she's stepping into looks so friendly and inviting. Of course, there's no telling who or what she'll meet there, and it's bound to have its perils. No good fantasy world is complete without them. But I'm sure she can handle herself. I don't remember if I've ever seen a portrayal of this sort of idea where the clothes change as you pass through the portal or not, but I'm leaning toward not. Probably it has been done somewhere, but it's still a unique enough idea to be really cool, I think. I kind of want to steal that outfit for my very own, too.
Oh, secret gardens are right up there with looking glass worlds, and all the rest of them. They hold every bit as much mystery and promise, in their own way, as any other secret place, whether the portal that takes you there is genuinely magical or not.

I'm glad you like it! I had the pleasure of watching her draw this, and I absolutely fell in love with this picture right from the start. It's one of my very favorite pictures of Megan, too. Now I just have to resist the temptation to steal the fantasy outfit that Oli designed for her.
Don't catch your ears on the doorway!
Oli really does rabbits well, and I like the couple of pieces she's done of your bunny. She really gets the ears and teeth right. I believe I've only seen a few other artists that get them just right without the teeth being too large and stereotypical, and in this one just enough tooth is showing for them to be cute.
The outfit design is really lovely too, and it really does feel like she's stepping into a medievel time where jeans and cars would be scarce and replaced with bracers and carts.
It's always lovely to open a book and get to step into another world. The Narnia series did that very well, and I was always a little sad when I had to step back into my own and put the book down, just as they were when they had to leave Narnia. Sometimes it's so appealing to just get lost in a world for a while. It's always seemed unfair that time has to pass in the real world as it does when you're lost in your own!

Oh, I agree. I love how she draws rabbits, and it's always wonderful to find an artist who is able to get rabbit ears, and especially their teeth, just right. People drawing buck teeth on rabbits is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, actually, so she gets extra cool points for that. It's a fantastic picture all around, too. I just gave Oli the barest idea of what I wanted, and she took off and ran with it. I'm really quite tempted to commission her again in the future to see if she won't draw the full fantasy outfit that Megan's clothes are being transformed into. It's really such a lovely outfit!
I know exactly what you mean. I'm sure I've said so before, but one of the reasons I became a writer was because it always made me so sad to come to the end of a book and to have to leave the world it introduced you to. So, in order to try to hold on to that feeling of being lost in another world, if just a little bit, I started trying to create my own. I still feel sad when I finish a book, but it is nice to know you can slip into your own world whenever you wish.
