Okay, so. I don't usually upload (or cross-post) sketches this tremendously messy and barely referenced and personal, but just since it's a unicorn doppelganger and I do love me my unicorn doppelgangers, this seemed like the right thing to do.
This fellow's name is Leopold: yet another spawn of Emery and Delilah, the two falsicorn ladies from my Woodsy Outing image a little while ago (here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8349508/). He's Toby's elder brother, and exhibits a number of traits that must've been sitting dormant in the bloodline for a couple generations. Not only does he have Em's rare recessive tentacle-type horn; his 'mane' is more of a literal lion's mane than rest of the family's more typical hair-like locks. It grows in big furry tufts that start along his spine like a normal horse/unicorn, but then wraps around his shoulders to form a sort of 'collar' that continues on between the legs and down the underbelly. He's also got a much more extensively running tail ruff, the hair of which is also much thicker and plusher, though it still does a fine job of hiding his tail hook when in a docile rest position.
I know I'm rambling, but these guys are kind of precious to me. I think they're my favorite species I've ever made up-- or at least up there. The idea for Leo's design came largely from some heraldic unicorn illustrations I stumbled across somewhere (it's been too long to remember specifics), but I do recall that their manes did this same sort of wrapping, and it seemed like a great trait for my gene pool.
Ironically even in black and white, this guy's probably not far off from his proper color scheme. I imagine he'd be pure classical white like Delilah, but with a darker graying/possibly gold flecked mane.
I've also come to realize that these guys are totally a single sex race! I wasn't really aware of that when I created them, but it just kind of is, and I think it fits them. All falsicorns have the same internally stored genitalia (I guess you could think of it as vaguely birdlike or reptilian-- not visible unless it's in 'use'), and are essentially hermaphrodites, with the capacity to carry young or impregnate another individual. They can and often have certain 'sex' characteristics in their behavior, though their personal gender would be purely a choice of what feels right to the individual, and is regarded as more of a sliding scale of preference than a concrete physical thing.
Emery (the gray dapple in the previously linked image), for example, is female, but takes pride in her militant aggressiveness and typically 'masculine' position of the family guard, while Delilah is female and more classically feminine. Toby refers to herself in the feminine and considers herself loosely female, but is for all intents and purposes a complete androgyne (with little personal issue in switching to a male position if she felt inclined), while Leopold is decidedly male-- very male-- but has a softer emotional core about him that would be considered more towards the female end of the spectrum.
Anyway, I ramble! Enjoy the doodle!

These are flipping awesome I just love when you post them! I can't wait to see more you are so very talented. I love the idea and Leopold is beautifully created. I love the tentacle like horn and the fact that they don't have eyes where they should be yet still have the bone structure of the orbital socket :) sorry I am now rambling lol I just love the creativity that you have to create such wonderful creatures.
Also.. Doppelganger :P
Also.. Doppelganger :P
Aw, man, thank you-- and glad you dig 'em, too! They do actually have something in the orbital sockets that's fairly recessed (their heat pit organs, which are roughly eye-'equivalent' in structure and still rooted directly into the brain with thick nerves), but I shamelessly enjoy the creep factor of eyes where they shouldn't be.
... And shh, DOPPELGANGER IS A COOL WORD OKAY. 8[ It sounds cooler than mimic or fake, anyway!

I do very much so! I definitely can't wait to see more maybe even some more doppelganger/mimic species like with okapi or quagga or something lol. These are awesome. Ahhhh cool :P hey nothing wrong with the creep factor! They are carnivorous doppelganger unicorns.. That creep factor makes them that much more badass
Lmao oh no I love the word never hear it often XD
