Our Distance
You are the electricity to my light bulb
trailing along a wire to the lantern
on my ceiling, stretching from the first floor
to the third, never truly meeting with my fibers.
You are the color in the world
Lighting up every angle, every shard
Behind my eyes, telling me this is so.
This world is truth, it’s all we know.
You are the duct tape on my heart
Holding me together, piece by piece
Invisible and strong, ever present.
The shattered pieces will be forever there.
You are the flavor in my meals, the sage, the sugar,
The sound in my headphones, sharp notes and soft,
The protective arms around me, telling others
To stay back and be gentle.
But like the wire, you are far from me, and
When we touch, it is through a glass case
Fingertips to fingertips, pressing hard as we can,
As if we will somehow break through.
The light bulb would shatter, as would my heart,
If we were to grow any closer, this electric
Shock running through my veins. And so
I keep my distance, and you yours,
To keep
My duct tape in place, my colors bright, my sound
Bright and infinite, my flavors full and sweet.
The distance between us is infinite, and yet so very,
Very small.
