These are some rough sketches I did a while back for an idea of Petina and Jackie posing with a model of the moon rocket from the Tin-tin graphic novel "Journey to the Moon." Of course they had to be wearing the classic 1950's skin-tight spacesuits with the bubble helmets and cooling fins. Included are some ideas for goofy ray-gun designs which was tougher challenge for me to design than I thought since most of first ideas people said. "Looks like a really weapon. Not some kitchy toy." So I purposely had to go and make them look awkward and silly instead of compentent.

Sometimes I wonder whether people find retro-tech vaguely embarassing and toylike because of the assumption of optimism.

I don't know? If that was the case it would seem that the current popular trend of all retro design that has caught on in some industrial design. In particular for, cars, motorcycles, and some home applinances would not have been son well received by the public. Still just sticking cool-looking fins on a new car won't sell it if the guts of it don't live up to the buying public expectations of what new cars should be. Ford got burned on the new Thunderbird a few years back. Intitial sales were good but after the first wave of nostalgia wore off the public got cold to the all rattles and poorly thought out aspects of it. A few years later when Ford decided to give the Mustang an updating they made certain the undergear would be more up to snuff to go with the cool 70's look they were projecting. Much better success for Ford!
