And dusting off old clay shards. Most ancient temples and cities arent exactly as intact as the one Jones finds. Most of them are just remains hidden in the geological layers.

You've got that right. I was reminded of the trip my friends Jim and Carol took to England, and they visited the remains of a Roman Bath house somewhere on the Island's East coast. All that remained of the place was a few standing walls and lots of red clay shards. (Mostly from roofing tiles.) Carol found a shard barely a quarter inch wide and barely an inch long, but it was still kind of exciting to touch something that was made by someone almost 1,000 years ago.
