Still though ... it is an intense part of the story, and it's only a dream. She's had "they don't want me" issues for a long time, I imagine, because she's said before that her parents didn't want her. If that doesn't install some emotional problems in somebody, I don't know what would. We might find out more about her mysterious past ... but it's not a happy past, I think.
Aaaagh, we aren't going to find out who the mysterious folf is! Sigh ... you are very good at teasing readers :)

from my guess theese dreams are her early repressed memories the man walking out was her father leaveing her and noone wanted her so she was sent to the orpanige and this dream sequance are those emmories relaseing themselves i can see gem wakeing up in a emotional mess hopeing that paul dose want her and finding out who that man (my guess her father) truely was
and all of theese memories are linked to her infent years (refering back to the dream with zeezee in the broken down house)

The way this nightmare is going sounds like it's mixed with a flash back. It's just cruel to send her back to an orphanage after all she went through When she does wake up she's going to have a major hangover and on top of that she'll be majorly depressed. *huggles Gem* =^w^= mew?
