No,its important to ref. As long as its not a paint-version of the photo, or a paint-version of a collage of photos, you're doing it right. I'm being a little hypocritical here as I have a bad habit of not doing it, but for any important paintings, I use them, and I'm trying to do it more.
I've started compiling a reference archive, and so far, it's huge. For all non stock photos I save them for color ref, fur direction, anatomy etc. I still have a bad habit of not double checking my sketches though :\ You probably saw what happened on my last commission lol
