So, in original MLP, some of them had gems instead of eyes. They were drawn a lot like you drew Rarity there. The canon explanation was amazingly amazing, especially considering the source.
On the back of the toys it said that blind ponies had been found in deep underground caves, and so magical jewels had been implanted in their otherwise useless eyes. :V
