In Russian, the meanings of "designer" diverged. A person who designs the internal workings of things is indeed "проектировщик", but the person who designs the exteriors to look good, be easy to use, etc. is "дизайнер"

Ah, thank you! What I need is a really good Russian-English dictionary with eytmological information; the online dictionaries I've been using rarely go into much detail about nuance... and Russian brims with nuance. :)
