This is what a cat who had severe bone cancer looks like. All of the areas that look rough and are darker colored are the cancer affected areas, you can especially see how it inflamed her jaw joint in the bottom picture. She was underground for about 3 years, so the weakest parts of the bone has been eroded away. This cat lived to be 18 years old!
About the cat:
As creepy as this might sound, this skull used to belong to one of my cats named Stormy. She was a big white and gray spotted cat. When she passed away, we buried her in the back yard. Three years later when we moved, my Mom didn't want to leave her there so asked me to dig up what I could to be reburied at our new house. (Stormy was her cat, my Mom loved her dearly.) I cleaned up her skull, and I never expected to see this. I knew she had cancer, but we never had any idea that it was this severe. She was a great cat. She hated me with a passion, but I respect her anyway. She was one of those cats who loved one person only. When I was little, she used to stalk me around corners and attack my ankles, and used to give me the most evil evil eye ever. But looking back now, it was pretty funny. And maybe if I was more respectful then, she wouldn't have hated me so much. xD

I don't think it's creepy either, to me it's basically the same thing as keeping a pet's ashes. But a lot of other people seem to find it very creepy.
It is quite interesting, and stunning that she lived so long with this and showed such little pain. If we knew that it was this bad, we would have had her put to sleep much sooner.

It's always hard to decide when to let go in cases like this.
I had a rabbit that had an abscess eating away at his jaw, we muddled along with painkillers and treatment until he stopped playing and we decided it was time.
Don't fault yourself for wanting to give them more time.

My old childhood cat had bad abscesses too, and we did the same. He was my best friend all growing up and through highschool, and passed away two years ago. I just couldn't bring myself to have him put down.. I fed him with a baby feeding syringe in a futile attempt to get his strength back because I just couldn't accept the fact that he was going to die. Looking at it now, I do wish that I had had him put to sleep instead of him wasting away like he did.
Right? It was very surprising to see all that while I was cleaning dirt off of her, I was never expecting that her cancer was so bad.
Haha yes, she hid in doorways and around corners to attack my ankles when I was like 10. xD My Mom loved her to pieces, I'm still kind of surprised that she wanted me to clean the skull instead of re-burying it.

Part of me would want to keep my pet cockatiel's skull.. But at the same time I'd be too upset to do such a thing to him. <x'D It would be cool if I could get him taxedermized in a glass dome.. but that's really expensive.... I'll just cross my fingers on the fantasy that the little buggar will outlive me. >X''D
Haha yeah, I don't think I would have the guts to clean my own 'buddy' pet's skulls. This cat was my Mom's, so I didn't have a real huge emotional bond to the cat herself. If I wanted one of my pet's skulls, I'd have to have someone else clean it or I'd end up bawling the entire time. xD
Bird taxidermy usually isn't terribly expensive I don't think, especially for one that small. And if you got it taxidermied, you'd be able to have the skull also since they don't use it! xD

Cats rarely show any sign of pain, My dad had a cat who fell and broke her jaw, it took them 3 days to figure that out and it was only because she stopped eating the kibble (They always had wet and dry food out, so she was only eating the mush)
It's crazy seeing the bone in that state. Especially the calcified mass on her jaw...

Yeah, cats are extremely tough. Stormy was still eating a wet/dry food mix up until the last couple weeks. I don't know how with her jaw like that.
What I forgot to take a photo of is the big calcified mass that was attached to her jaw also- It's the size of a peach pit and was attached to the top of her jaw. (It fell of while I was cleaning her)
