The São Paulo and the Battle at Barnard's Star
The São Paulo was one of several warships present at the outset of the 1st Interstellar War at Barnard's Star in 2115.
The colony at Barnard's Star was little more than a lifeless rock, but the system's placement was crucial to reach stars (and therefore Imperial Markets) further coreward of Earth. From the Imperial side of the map, any assault on Terra would most likely have to pass through Barnard's Star or else circumnavigate through systems that had no easily available natural fuel sources, far to spinward and rimward of Terra.
The colony had started out as a few dozen Vilani, but rapidly swelled with scientists and diplomats from Earth as well as military bases from each of Earth's starfaring nations, such that the Terrans as at the time of the first battle at Barnard's, had 2000 in residence to the Vilani's 50 or so trade representatives and miners.
In late 2114, a Sharushid merchant convoy flew too close to the American orbital base in system, ignoring the base's traffic control signals. Believing an attack to be imminent, the Americans opened fire, destroying two Vilani ships, sparking the First Interstellar War.
A Vilani reprisal fleet, small by Imperial standards, arrived at Barnard's in early 2115. Although preparation for the potential confrontation had been underway for months, a lack of coordination between the various national space assets present, and an imbalance of short range beam weapons versus the Vilani's heavy missile destroyers led ultimately to Terra losing the first battle.
The Terran fleet's only advantage was a higher raw tonnage of vessels, but with the Chinese and the Russian elements joining the fray late, and the Sao Paulo jumping into system mid battle after the Americans had almost been destroyed, the Vilani eliminated the Terran combined forces in detail before obliterating the Barnard's Star colonial bases. Only a few small jump capable craft were able to escape the carnage to relay to Earth what had happened.
Luckily for Terra the Vilani believed such a show of force would suffice to put the 'barbarians back in their place', and the task force returned coreward once finished with Barnard's Star.
Only a little of the above is considered Canon Traveller lore, the rest being made up for my little tabletop redo/conversion of MegaTraveller's ship to ship combat rules into something better suited to using LOTS of miniatures. The Barnard's Star battle was interesting to me because its outcome was already known from game canon, but the compositions of the fleets involved is only described as roughly the Vilani having better long range missiles, while the Terrans used lots of beam weaponry. Since the battle took place before the formation of a unified Terran government, I figured each country had its own ship designs and kept their capabilities and fleet compositions somewhat classified from other parties, even on their own side.
My original description of the Sao Paulo for the sample battle I arranged to replay the opening battle of the First Interstellar War follows:
Sleek, beautiful and very short ranged, the rare railgun ship Sao Paulo was designed to race into close range and take out its targets with 5 massive railguns, using stealth to help hide the already modest energy signature of this deadly lurker.
Unfortunately railguns have the same restrictions of the short ranged Plasma cannon, and subsititute power requirements for a hefty amount of mass and volume in ordnance, though they could also be used as point defense against incoming missiles.
