so i need some help with how to finish this. i scanned and printed it and have been trying to do like just a simple grass scene for the rest but it turns out horrible. i am very pleased with what i have so far and don't want to ruin the original. can anyone point me to a tutorial on landscapes or something?

I love it!
May I suggest something a bit unconventional? Use a photograph of a valley backed by mountains, another of a tepee, another of a campfire, composite them together, filter them to make them dreamier, and use them as a background. I like a mixture of transformed photos and drawn art, and have seen some beautiful combinations, for example:

You could even use a 19th century Curtis photo as the landscape - the copyright has expired - just give him credit.

Check Ebay and Amazon for used copies. Make sure that all the documentation is included. A used Photoshop Elements 2, 3, or 4 with manual will cost between $25 and $75.
If you are running Windows, look for a used copy of Photoshop 6 or 7. On Windows, Adobe Corp's "activation" policy effectively prevents "used" copies of Photoshop (but not Photoshop Elements) from running. On the Mac, which I have, Photoshop CS runs without activation.
I bought a used Photoshop 5 for $25, and an upgrade to Photoshop CS for $61.
You can be running Photoshop 7 for under $100, and most digital art on FA was done with this version, either using a used or bootleg copy. For example, this was done with Photoshop 7:

Photoshop CS is actually Photoshop 8, with a fancy marketing name change. I've done all my art with CS, and there is very little difference between 7 and 8. I feel no temptation to upgrade to Photoshop CS-3; I doubt that I'd use the additional expensive features. Moreover, "activation" means that you can run CS-3 on only one computer. Photoshop 6, 7, or CS on a Mac - or Photoshop 6 or 7 on a Windows PC - will run on both your desktop and laptop since no Adobe "activation" is required.
If you get it, unplug your computer from the internet when you install it, and click on the "register by mail" option, then don't send the registration in.
Photoshop Elements 3 and especially 4 are a big step up from Elements 2.
I haven't used ArtRage, but reading the specs suggests that it should work. GIMP is free but a bit buggy and has a complicated user interface. Hex has used ArtRage and WetRabbit uses GIMP.
If you have any more questions, I'd be delighted to try to answer them. I love your bold colorful style (which reminds me of Vincent van Gogh's), and I think that it would go marvelously with photographic backgrounds. For example, you could take a Curtis 19th century monochrome photo and color it. How about a furry Native American "Starry Night"?
