..:: || The Vios Lumaen - "Living Light" || ::..
Breed : Vios Lumaen – The name of the breed comes from the Greek word bios, meaning “living” and the Latin word lumen, meaning “light” hence Vios Lumaen; Living Light. The name was given because of the luminescence of the markings, mane, tail, fire and the spores given off of the horses themselves. The name is often shortened to Vios for simplicities sake.
Breed History: The origins of the Vios Lumaen is largely unknown. Some say they were left behind by malevolent spirits and creatures during an ancient war while others say they are a physical manifestation of the souls of horses that died a traumatic death, their light being what remains of their spirits.
The Vios are a generally reclusive breed of horse for numerous reasons. One of the biggest being that they are highly sought after for their unnaturally sturdy and powerful bone. Much of the breed was killed off from the plains and valleys leaving the Vios extinct in areas with low density or no forests.
Another major reason the Vios tend to be reclusive is due to the attention they garner because of their appearances. Their skulls, horns, bone exposed tails and grotesque looking bodies would make one wonder if this was a creature from beyond the grave or a steed of evil from their appearance. Their glowing manes, tails, eyes and markings and the fire blazing from their bodies are enough to turn many heads especially with the way they glow at night.
As such the Vios choose to live far from the presence of humans so as not to attract any unnecessary or unwanted attention to them.
Appearance: Vios Lumaen are naturally very dark in colour and are most commonly found in the darkest shades of any colour if not completely black. Although they are quite a capable breed their outward appearance would suggest otherwise. Their bodies look sickly and grotesquely thin with their bones protruding beneath the skin like and almost appear to have no muscle mass at all and give the impression that they are very waiflike. Despite this appearance though the Vios are quite agile and strong and are capable of many feats one would think impossible of the breed at a first glance.
Vios have exposed skulls with large horns of various shapes and sizes on their heads and the bone of their tail is exposed at the base of their pelvic bone. The bone has an unnatural hardness and sturdiness to it making it almost impossible to crack with anything other than the bone of another Vios and as such it is rare to find one with naturally broken or cracked skulls.
Aside from the eerie and rather plain look of their bodies and bones the Vios make up for their zombie like appearance with brilliant bioluminescence. Their bright flowing manes and tails, markings and flames ablaze on their backs glow with a beautiful foxfire seen most clearly in the dead of night. Their manes, tails and hooves are sporiferous and the spores they give off glow with their colours on whatever they land upon and the prints left behind by them as they walk glow like the fires of the fungi they mimic.
The markings vary from horse to horse but come in a variety of intricate designs, some of which even come together to form faces on the horse itself. On occasion the markings even spread to the skull and horns of the Vios giving off the impression of wearing war paint.
The fires licking the backs of the Vios and the chin of the stallions give them an ethereal feel adding to the eerie mystery of the breed. Because of all this these horses are occasionally mistaken for and described as Will-o’-the-Wisp.
Extra Note: While the Vios are generally very dark in colour making their markings, manes, tails, fire and spores pop against them there are occasions when a Vios has been found in colours like white or light greys. While the lighter colours don’t always stand out as much on them the darker varieties seem to work just as well even though they tend to be harder to see at night.
The marking colours of these horses are always very vibrant, rich and colourful but can on occasion come in monotone shades like white, black and grey. White is the most likely tone to be seen in Vios with a monotone gene followed by grey and lastly black.
Crossbreeds: The genes of the breed are fairly strong and any traits from a Vios in the lineage of a horse can be seen even in the most diluted of blood. A horse that has a Vios in its lineage could wind up looking almost identical to that horse or merely carry something as simple as a single physical trait like the mane and tail colour. Regardless the physical appearance of the horse would have some sign that a Vios is in its blood, even if it was just the spores that the Vios give off.
Mating: The Vios tend to choose mates that compliment their own colours and their choices in mates are based upon the brightness of their potential mates luminescence and the complexity of their markings. The more vibrant and complex the markings the more likely it is that mate will be chosen. Both the stallions and the mares compete for potential mates.
If there are two potential mates for a Vios and they cannot choose between them the two potential candidates will fight in a manner similar to rams to determine who is more fitting. It’s during these scuffles that some of the Vios can crack or even break their skulls or horns and while it won’t kill them, it makes them less desirable mates in the future if they lose.
Oddities: The call of a Vios sounds more like a high pitched and strangled screech than a whiny or neigh which gives way to the legends of the breed. This is because they lack actual vocal cords. How they produce any sound with this lacking feature is still unknown.
The colours of a Vios tend to be opposites, like warm colours with cold colours, with the colour on the tips of their manes and tails resembling the colour of their eyes and spores.
Mutation in the Breed: There is a recorded mutation of the breed that has stripped the horse of its mane and tail and replaced it with a roaring flame. The hooves are said to be cloven like those of a gazelle and the markings almost seem to move and shift like ghostly lights in a graveyard. Although this mutation has been recorded it is rarely seen.
If there is anything that I may have missed that someone may wish to know please don't hesitate to ask me and I'll try to get back to you with an answer.
Again as I said ion my characters sheet, if you're interested in this horse enough to want one yourself please let me know because as of now these guys aren't up for public creation and may not be unless I hear from enough people about their interest in it ^^
