Thank ya - it all sort of came together very quickly at the end - I've had the idea of a hound-like creature with a single eye gripped in its teeth for some time, but it was sort of an orphan until this week, when I suddenly imagined people in a wasteland, being hunted by hounds, and I thought - what if you couldn't hide from them because they can hear you breathing, a sound ONLY made by living things?

Yep, that definitely works. ^^ I wonder if you could remain undetected by using a closed rebreather system with mask.

Well, it's not the smell - it's the sound that gets to them - you'd be better off with something akin to a gun's silencer or a car's muffler...or you could just arrange to be escorted by somebody so big and full of air that they could easily incapacitate any hound nearby without the slightest risk of becoming a ghost ^__^...now who do we know who is like that >_> :D
