I'm writing a story about a man who gets struck by lightning and is subsequently able to travel in time, though not willfully. It's also about the poor sod who is somehow able to travel with him, and how he becomes the one fixed point of permanence in an estranged man's otherwise ephemeral existence. Yeah there you go vauge character/plot summary.
Lichtenberg figures are seen on lightning strike victims shortly after they're hit, caused by burst capillaries wherever the electricity travelled. Usually they fade within a few hours, but on fairer skinned people they can blister and scar. I figure if you go through something like that the least nature can do is give you a pretty badass mark of your survival.
I can't decide between the names Desmond and Edison, so I just keep referring to him by either name -_-
P.S. this isn't his hair style either I just don't know how to draw curly hair and have been drawing too much Sherlock so I defaulted XP

Maybe I missed something then, maybe time got changed around somewhere but I remember River saying some comment about how, when *she* first meets *him*, he knows everything about her and that it had a profound impact on her. I forget which episode that was in, though.
The episode where at the end River comes and talks to Amy about her adventures with the doctor... I think tries to close that loop but it feels like it's missing a lot. She references things in her tardis diary "have we done such-and-such yet?" that we never see, and it's that stuff I was referring to.
I do have to say though that the Hitler episode blew my mind.

Yeah, he knew all that stuff about her when he met her when she was going to kill Hitler. It was after he knew she was Melody Pond... When he more or less said he knew who she was she freaked out remember? Her whole life she wanted to kill him, and that was when her "whole life" changed.
And I think she said that in the episode where the Astronaut first "kills" the Doctor...
Also... sorry to everyone that has never seen these... Spoliers galore.

Lol yeah trying to reference things without spoiling is bad x_x
Yeah I concede that I am probably misremembering how it all happened with those two, I only saw the hitler episode once and I must have been too busy trying to recover from the Melody = River thing (should have seen it coming but still) that the rest just went in the eyes and out the ears, so to speak :P
See, now I have to go and re-watch all the eps with River in them to try and sort out that messed up continuity. >.>

Watch 'Triangle', 'Retroactive', '12 Monkeys' of course, and, most important of all, 'Primer'.
Time travel plots are extremely easy to fuck up. One has to first consider whether it's supposed to be a time travel mechanism that allows for changes to the timeline, which invites paradoxa, or a self-consistent timeline that only allows for stable loops. The latter (12 Monkeys, Triangle) requires you to carefully lay out the plot beforehand, and is thus usually unsuitable for long-running serial media. The former (Retroactive, Primer) requires you to lay down and abide by very rigid ground rules, and is generally hard to pull off successfully. Almost all plots which allow for changing timelines fall apart upon closer inspection (Back to the Future being the most prominent offender).
So, what kind of plot is it going to be?
Oh, and I vote for 'Desmond Edison' as a full name.

It belongs to the latter, but certain paradoxes I actually enjoy and am deliberately inserting into the story (bootstrap paradoxes are some of my favourite). In any case, I'm aware that time travel is very easy to muck up, no need to lecture me about it. Thanks for the movie recommendations, I'll look them up.
Those turned out great! Ah, and I completely forgot to send you thoughts on how William became quantumly entangled with Des/Edison, I've got to think on that some more. Still, glad the lightning strike -> time travel is working out!
Beautifully done, you're getting fantastic at making marred skin look genuinely scarred or track-marked instead of just tatooed or drawn on. Dunno how you do it.

It's the depth. x3 She managed to pull off the depth illusion, making it look like a scar that's ingrained in the skin such as a burn, rather than just on top of the skin. I wish I had her skill. x3

Gorgeous picture, and the Lichtenburg marks have always fascinated me.
I'd say don't go with Edison personally because he was a thief and a jerk, but I also am a huge fan of Nikola Tesla's work. But it's your character, so you have the ultimate say.
Desmond does have a nice ring to it. Why not Franklin though? XD

Franklin is and will always be a turtle in my mind :P I didn't choose Edison for the association with Thomas Edison - in this case it's his first name and not a surname. There's a man who works at my friend's job and that's his name and it just sort of suited in my mind because it's old fashioned and eccentric enough for him. I might have to invent a name for him to be honest, because nothing old-fashioned works or comes without associations.
I use http://www.babynames.com/ for most of my characters' names.
I use the Advanced Search which lets you choose 'Starts with' 'Ends with' '# of syllables' 'meaning' 'gender' and 'origin'. I find it very useful :)

Just be mindful of anachronistic names for your characters.

Do you mean picking a name that would not have existed in the time your character is set?
Ah I see;
"This is something for fiction writers to watch out for - one of the easiest ways to provoke a Did Not Do the Research reaction is to have an entire cast of 20- and 30-somethings with names that are popular baby names now but weren't in the '70s and '80s; or to have a period-set story where characters' names are typical of the generations that are that age today rather than the cohort the characters are supposed to belong to. An outlier or two is fine, but too many can be overwhelming."
For me I don't really have that issue as my characters are never really set in... our reality XD
Though its definitely something to look out for :3

To be honest, I saw a picture like this before, like a photograph, and the caption said it was the aftermath of being struck by lightning and I thought it was photoshopped. But I see they are actually possible! But I love this shot, it would look great as a title cover. And I'd go with Desmond <3
Oh my god, I read up on these scars eons ago, was a victim to a few strikes in my youth. ><
Kinda wish I had one of these scars to show for it. Would be so very badass. XD
And hah! Reading the comments above, I thought this would have some inspiration from The Time Traveler's Wife. Such a great movie, that, and an interesting concept.

I liked it. x3
And... yeah. A few. >> Thrice. Is one of the reasons I try to be happy, and feel lucky with everything I have. Because it used to -always- be on my mind that if I was just another step in X direction I'd have gotten a more direct hit somewhere vital. ><
... And this is why I'm a fuzz, yes, SO MUCH STATIC. xD

Wow, I really can't imagine getting struck. I've been close to lightning strikes (as in fifteen feet away) and that was scary enough.
I never did watch the movie, but I read the book. I read a few reviews of the movie and decided not to watch it because they changed the ending and kind of ruined it. Book definitely made me sob like a baby.

Majority of my memory from it kinda reminds me of how in some FPS games the flash-bang grenades leave the sound dulled out and slowly recovering. I didn't actually -hear- the bang, everything just kinda went quiet, except for that hissing whine like sound that usually comes with tinnitus. >>
Was over 15+ years ago, though, nearly 20 now actually, hah. Is definitely something I wouldn't want others to experience. Being a safe distance from a pound of C4/high speed explosives is much more exciting!
And awwwr. I'll have to hunt down the book one day. The movie itself was OK to me, but again, I haven't read the book!

I'd rather you not, since it's sort of meant to represent my story and not someone else's ^_^* I normally don't mind use of my work in that regard, but since this is already a story reference for my character, it'd be kinda weird having it used for another different story.
