the name of the story sounds familiar.
i can say for sure if i've read it.
if i had, it would have been a good many years ago.
most likely sometime between 71 and 93 or so.
if it ever appeared in analog, if, or f&sf,
its even more likely that i did.
many many things i've read in those,
and rather a large number of anthologies,
over the years have inspired much of my thinking,
but i make no attempt to recall which ideas came from where.
piper's little fuzzy, cherreh's chenure, many others,
led me to furry.
lafferty and leguinne for cultural inspiration,
again among many others.
mini-talent by tak halis (an obvious pseudonym, but who's i have no idea)
and zozzel said the zozzel mind, both very short stories,
probably much forgotten by the rest of humanity,
were major influences, and at least on science fiction author, for every last name letter of the alphabet,
often more then one for each, again mostly between those same years. some earlier, some since.
though not as many.
and the mind changer by 'verge foray' and 'and comfort to the enemy' (a world of biology based technology i forget who wrote)

when faded sun was serialized in analog, that was the first i'd heard of cherryh.
leguinne, i'm not sure what of her's i read first. i think it was left hand of darkness.
always coming home is i think what first got me thinking in terms of post ecopocalypse.
word for world is forest, because basically i grew up surrounded by forest, in the sierras in california.
met her several times at conventions in oregon, when i lived up there in the 80s.
bester, yup, stars my destination. only title of his i remember, and i think it was in omni.
it was some place i wasn't expecting it at the time, and had color illos.
(i'm pretty sure i've read others, just can't recall the names of any of them)
i think he edited one of the major zenes for a while, but i could be mistaken.
i know bova was omni. not sure who was first to take analog after campbel either.
