I've been playing Portal.
I was amazed by the fact that Valve accomplished to give this "weighted companion cube" a touching charakter, though it may seem like an inanimate object (which it actually is) ... Cool game by the way. A little short, though.
I'm sure that there will be a lot of weighted companion cubes around for the time following, so this is my part of it :B ...

Little trivia about Portal and the companion cube. Value didnt create Portal, it was two graduates in Seattle, who made the concept. Value picked it up, funded it and gave the two graduates their Source engine to work with. So the companion cube technically wasnt created by Value.
Those two students you mentioned developed a game called "Narbacular Drop" (freeware, btw) which covered the basics of portaling. This concept was later picked up by valve and (with the permission and help of said students) developed into today's state of Portal. So, technically, the companion cube was created by valve. As is any other content of the game except for the technical basics.
The companion cube was only meant to be a learning tool and teach you how to use the weighted storage cubes, you had to bond with it or you would leave it behind in the level and have to backtrack to get it ^^ I read a Valve slide show about it, it's a brilliant little thing they did, and it made a cult following meme that I'm glad to be part of ^^
