Go to a place where there is billions of dollars of gold, no state income taxes, no land use planning, no zoning, and no building permits - like central Nevada, where I live. THEN engage planning, patience, and hard work! Without bureaucrats skimming off all the cream and gumming up the works, you would be amazed at all the work that is available!!
You could try being born into a rich, corrupt family with political ties.
Oh wait, that involves criminal activity. You could go into politics, raking in the dough from all the rich corrupt families wanting to buy your vote on certain hot topics of theirs.
No, that *IS* criminal activity. You could try starting up a software company, write a core OS that will kill any competitor's office programs and make it look like it's the competitor's fault Then as new ideas spring up, bundle them into your OS, thus driving the original developers out of business, thus expanding your market share though your monopolistic power.
No, that's a slow activity AND criminal. You could steal resources from a poor, third-world country, or go to war with a wealthy third-world country that realized how much their resources were worth.
No, that's also criminal. You could sell Amwa- No, that's TOO EVIL FOR WORDS! (As well as a fools dream, only the guys at the top of the pyramids make any real money.)
I guess there is no way to make an honest buck in this country anymore.

Invent something stupid like the Pet Rock or the Million Dollar Web Page. You know, something so amazingly stupid nobody else ever thought of it before.
Or, you could find a legal way to cash in on an illegal market. Like, how the iPod cashed in on all the illegal MP3 trading that had been happening years before.

That's what happened to me. My good fortune was that my father got me a position working at his job.
Part of what makes job-searching worse here in the Southwest is that there are so many immigrant workers (legal and illegal) who are accepting super low-wage jobs, that most larger companies won't bother with native talent; even if that talent has superior education and experiance.
Supposidly, native workers with an education would eventually start requesting higher pay and more benefits, while immigrant workers will work long hours with low pay without a word. Also, due to the Immigration Office's recent crackdowns in the last few years, illegal workers will only work at any one job for a year or two, then move on.
My workplace was so use to hiring immigrant workers who stayed only a few years, that when they started gathering employees with more then three-four years of experiance, they didn't have a payment plan for them and just frooze their wages at $7.10 an hour.
It wasn't until a statewide policy change came into effect that they allowed those employees to be given proper wages.
Overall it makes it easier to see why illegal immigration is such a hot issue down here.

Well part of that is the problem down here, but not so much so with the higher jobs.
With the higher level jobs, its just a question of aristocracy vs. meritocity. In other words, when it comes to getting a job, no one gives a shit about what kind of education you have or how hard you worked in college, all that REALLY matters (though they dont tell you up front) is if you got someone who can GET you that job. Unfortunately I hve no connections, so I dont get hired. Everyone else I know always tells me 'Oh, my friend got me the job' or 'My dad knows the manager' or 'I work for a family buisness'. Whenever I try to use these connections, I always get the same 'Well, cant help you, why not just apply? They are hiring', which is always a dead end. Only other time I can actualy use connections is in jobs that now use automated application devices that completely null that advantage.
