A lot of people think I am some sort of bat. They normally see me hanging around the office during the night shift. I think it’s crazy and stupid that they would think that because every case tends to happen right after dusk. I was finishing up some paperwork for a case for some idiot that decided to get high on cocaine and kill someone. To be honest it was the dumbest case that I had to work on.
While finishing up some other cases as well, my boss decided to walk on in all zombie like with a rather thick folder in his hand. I looked up to see the expression on his face and something told me that whatever was in the folder, it was not good at all. Normally, he would just act like that to try and yank my chain, or try and test me. But then again, I could never guess what was going through that thick skull of his.
“What brings you to my office with that ugly mug of yours,” I asked sarcastically. The chief looks at him with his left eyebrow slowly rose as he gave somewhat a glare to me.
“Well smartass, I had this thick case dropped on my desk today and from the looks of it, this requires someone of your brains and skills. You think you can handle that?”
I slowly took the file from his hand, opened it up and then looked back at him, eyes wide. He nodded to me and left, shutting the door behind him. For a few moments, I stared at the disturbing contents in the folder, then grabbed my bag and the rest of my gear and left the office.
Before I could walk of out of the building, I heard the boss tell everyone that I had to have a partner for this new case. Everyone looked at me like I was some kind of prey. Letting out a huff, I slowly made my way out of the building, while listening to people suck up and try to become my partner. Not telling them, I already had a partner in mind, who is actually my right hand man. Anyway, while every cop was pretty much begging me to get the partner spot, I grumbled to myself and kept to myself. Sometimes I wish that they had to plague and just die. But then again, if that was to happen, I wouldn’t have anyone to laugh at if something went completely wrong.
Anyways, I managed to finally get out of the office before someone was able to nag at me about a partnership. As I stood in front of the door, I looked around and took a deep breath, taking in the smell of fresh rain on the pavement and slowly started walking to my car. It isn’t much on the outside. But under the hood, well that’s another beast right there. I slowly got in and let out a soft sigh, starting up the car and started my journey home while the rain was starting up again. While I was driving, the case that the boss gave me was going through my mind. So many questions were racing through my mind. I shook my head and focused on the road, trying not to let the case bother me. But after trying to fight the thought of the case, my stomach started to growl a little.
Now trying to figure out on what should eat, I finally pulled up to my house, turning the car off and sitting there for a moment, I look over to my left, noticing that my neighbor Mr. Moore was standing by the fence line with a very angry and sour look. Letting out a little groan, I slowly got out of the car with my gear, wondering what kind of insults he was planning on throwing out at me. Since I knew he was about to lash out, I decided to be smart ass and waves at him, knowing he doesn’t like me saying or making any gesture at him. Seeing this, Mr. Moore flipped me off and started to rant out with rage, which was pretty amusing, since he was like eighty years old and still lived back in the fifties.
“Hey you goddamn mutated alien. How about you get your alien self and alien friends out of this neighborhood while you can before everyone decide to kick you out by force,” he said out in fury. I pause for a second and turned to face him, giving a little glare at him.
“Let me tell you something gramps. The last time I checked, which was this morning, the neighborhood loves me here since I’m part of the police department and not corrupted. Second, who in the hell gives you the right to tell me that I need to leave just because of who I am? Last, I am not no damn alien. You better watch it old man, you’re going to catch me on the wrong day and you end up not having a funeral when you kick the can.”
Mr. Moore snarled as he stormed back to his house and slammed the door. I take in a deep breath to calm my nerves and do the back, but without the attitude and slamming the door. Once inside, it felt like a big burden has been lifted off of me for the time being. I threw all my stuff in the closet and made my way to the kitchen. I placed the files on the counter and went to the fridge, trying to find something decent and filling. After opening the door, I lowered my head in disappointment, finding out that it was mostly empty.
