Very cool, but next time you find one don't pick it up by the tail, pick it up by the sides so you don't hurt it. If the tail had broken off he would be in serious trouble.

Thats not me picking up the horseshoe crab. Also his tail was ok it didn't break off. If he had picked him up from the side he would have pinched him.

I've handled Horse Shoe crabs before as part of a job I had (we took them to places with kids along with other animals). It is not possible for them to pinch you or hurt you in anyway. Please never allow a person to hold them like that. They can't hurt you so pick them up from their sides.

I didn't think it did, but its very easy for it to break off when picked up by the tail. I pick up horseshoe crabs all the times that are even bigger than that, and the pinches don't hurt xD They aren't for defense, just for walking. They aren't strong at all.

They are hard to find up here they are collected because of the proteins in their blood help prevent freezing processes and a lot of testing medications are out.
They are also harvested for the meat as bait here. It is unfortunate last time I saw one alive was when I was about 10. That was 11 years ago :(
