Sometimes it's easy to forget just how effortless it is for Buck Hopper (Rabbit, G, STA) to get his paws well above the rim! Everybody knows rabbits can jump, but when they've been working on their jump since they were kits, it's a whole different level!
Funny story with this one! All the years that I've been going to furry cons, I've scoured the art shows for basketball-themed works. No luck so far. But I did keep noticing one artist whose works featured sports-- not always the basketball stuff I was looking for, but still stuff I really appreciated seeing. But it was a name I wasn't familiar with, and I didn't know anyone who knew who the artist was.
At Anthrocon 2012, I had pre-ordered a badge from
cooner, and on the first day headed to his table to pick it up. There was a line to speak with Cooner, so I got in the back and waited my turn. But while I was waiting, a furry friend waved to me from the next table over. I've known
invisiblewolf for longer than just about anyone I've met in the fandom, and it was great to see him again, so I stepped out of line to catch up.
Now, there's a peculiar stress to having a social moment at a dealer's den table. Spiritwolf and I were chatting it up for quite a while, having a great time asking how each other had been, and doing it long enough that I started to get concerned about what kind of a mess I might be causing for the nearby artists. Cooner was to my left and still had a line to get through, so I wasn't too concerned about him. But to the right was an artist I didn't recognize who had been patiently letting me stand right in front of his table, chatting up Spiritwolf and potentially discouraging customers from walking up to him. So as our conversation wrapped up, I desperately tried to think of a way to make it up to this poor artist I had been table-mobbing for the last ten minutes. I happened to have my sketchbook with me with the intention of handing it to Cooner, but... desperate times!! I asked the mystery artist if he was accepting sketchbooks. He was, so I asked for a sketch of my character, and I was delighted to hear he was familiar with B-Hop.
The next day, when I picked up my sketchbook and looked and what he'd drawn, my eyes probably swelled more than I would have liked. It was that guy!!! The artist who does the sporty pics in the art shows! It's really him!!
And now I've got an awesome pic of my character in my sketchbook!
So a huge thank you to Derrick Dasenbrock not just for this wonderful sketch, but all the awesome sports artwork you've put up in con art shows! :)
