These are most of my photos from Megaplex 2012: Turning Back the Gears.
I didn't think it would be possible after last year being so amazing, but this year was even better. :D
I've been to Megaplex 4 years in a row, and it gets more awesome every time. ^__^
First let me tell you that not every furry convention is the same or has the same tone. Some are casual and small, some are showy and huge, and they can be centered around Performances, Dancing, Parties, Outdoor activities, outings, Indoor activities, Costuming, and a LOT more. However, Megaplex is a Medium-sized convention (650+ guests. 1/6 fursuiters) with a family-friendly atmosphere for the most part (even though it's mostly College-Age furries). They have a variety of shows, games, panels, parties and dancing. They always have at least one or more impressive guest of honor (like Paul Zaloom of "Beakman's World", Noel MacNeal from "Bear in the Big Blue House", and popular furry celebs).
Here is the usual Set-up of convention space:
- Main Auditorium (for big stage shows and panels)
- Studio/Club (Pro Photography by day, Dance Party by night)
- Game Room (Tons of TVs and consoles of every vintage, plus tables and table-top games)
- Dealer's Room (Come buy your high quality hand-crafted artwork and furry trinkets here)
- Artist's Ally (Can't afford to rent dealer space? Take an empty seat with fellow artists and buy, sell, and trade amazing artwork!)
- Fursuit Headless-Lounge (Reserved for the fursuiting crowd, come inside and cool-off between performances, get some water, or Fabreeze that funky fursuit)
- Panel room (a quiet classroom setting for intimate hands-on lectures and tutorials)
- Did I mention you can see Disney's Animal Kingdom from the hotel? Seriously, it's only like a mile up the street.
There are also special privilege party rooms and such made available only to sponsors (and others willing to pay extra to help support the convention and its charity)
Here are the types of events to expect:
- Live musicians, DJs, and even Karaoke (Sometimes even actual stage shows like "Jullie Bunny Must Die" or "Rocky Horror")
- Live stand up comedy and webcasts (like Uncle Kage or the Funday Pawpet Show)
- Audience participation games like quiz shows, fursuit olympics, artist challenges, extreme charades, and more
- Amazing panels and special guest stuff that are often interactive and informative
- Dancing competitions, and casual club dancing
- Gaming (card games, board games, video games, and RPGs are always going on in the game room)
- Fursuit activities are ongoing, so put on your fluffiness and go have some fun!
- Pool Parties and Room parties happen a lot if you just want to chill out with a few new friends
Pro Tips:
1. Don't Forget your Badge!! Security is tight for your safety, so wear that badge proudly in plain sight.
2. Florida Heat killing you? Fursuit after Dark. They usually don't lock up the con til 2am, and then there's always room parties after that
3. Relax, have fun, make new friends. This con is the perfect size to be big enough for variety and small enough to run into the same people now and then.
4. Read the schedule when you first sign in so you don't miss anything you want to see. Multiple events happen at once, so you'll have to make some hard choices.
5. Have cash on hand for vendors, artists, and dealers.
6. Bring your own food/drinks to save on cash and driving of site for meals, thus saving con time (Most rooms have a fridge).
7. Get at least ONE good full-night of sleep at least one night during the con. Trust me, low-sleep can spoil a lot of your fun. Energy Drinks don't replace sleep!
8. Leave the Drama at home and try to enjoy yourself... it's like Spring Break, Christmas, and a Birthday Party all at once!
9. Lead by example! The hotel staff love us furries because we set a good example and treat others with kindness and respect. Help improve the general public's image of furries!

Last year, I didn't even find a pic of me ^__^
I was much better at making sure that didn't happen this year (as you can see, my orange-fluffyness is in a few pics, plus I went to the photo shoot and the parade and group shot this year.
I can send you your pic if you want it.

First con is always a great moment. This was my 4th Megaplex, and they seem to get better every year! ^__^

So I'm thinking of going to Megaplex next year (2013)
And I've never been to a huge convention, what should I be expecting?
I live in Florida, in St. Pete. And I got a friend who will be renting the hotel room with me.
We're already planning what fursuit to make for this event XDDD
I just want someone who's been there to tell me what it's like :3
I wish I have found out about this sooonner
