Yeah, Multiply and Overlay can also work well -- it depends on the texture, the image, and what look you're going for.
Whichever way you go, you'll probably have to scale back the opacity of the texture layer a good bit, and you may choose to make a layer mask to take down the texture intensity on the figure some (don't want to paint up a pretty face, then cover it all up with grunge and grime ^_^).
But yeah, play around! It's a little weird at first, but it can totally take a quick, flat painting (not that this one is either of those things OF COURSE 9_9...) and give it some visual interest.

Buy my book <3
Haha, I talk all about how I do all my stuff in there, and have in-progress images for this and most of the other pieces I have up here ^_^ I'll post a link to where you can pick it up online once online sales start hopefully in the next few days.
I've also talked about a bunch of technical stuff in the comments of the pics up here in the past -- if people have specific questions, I'm always happy to answer. I'd only recommend checking out the book because there's 52-pages' worth of info in there as opposed to quick comments here and there on FA -- I'm not looking to drain anybody's blood ^_^
