Recently started working on making my own chain mail. A friend of mine made a few shirts already and sold me some rings so I could try it myself. I'd like to continue with this, just need to make a hand crank to bend the wire and a decent pair of cutters.

I used to spin my own rings using 14 fencing wire
a 3/8th (or smaller) dowel
and an electric drill
then a pair of heavy wire cutters/ mini bolt-cutters (and I wore out more than a few of them)
I really do not have the time do to that kinda of stuff anymore
are you going to weld those links so they do not pull apart?

I wore out at least 5 pairs of those when I was larping making chainmail for The Brannicks Irregulars
Of COURSE, some motherfucker broke into the cabin my last trip out and stole everything but my wallet and keys
I wasn't the only person hit either... but I stopped being able to afford to go after that, and I do not have the time to larp anymore

depends.
soldering iron and solder would be the easiest. just have to heat the links up until the solder will melt and form the connection. not the strongest link, but better than open rings.
a torch and some brass wire would be the next easiest. Brazing. Oh, and flux of course.
a low voltage wire welder would be stronger, but might melt the link rather than connect it. I never looked into that. I didn't have the money back then, now I have a welder but no chain to want to weld.
I guess getting a pocket torch, or soldering iron, and some solder would be the least expensive way to go about it.
you would have to hand weld each and every link as you sewed them together. time consuming, but a LOT faster than flattening the ring, punching a hold in it, and riveting them closed one at a time... which is what they did in Ye Olde Days Of Yor
