This was a wedding cake for a bride that I did in 48 hours, with only 170$ as payment when it nearly cost 250 at least to just get all the supplies needed to make it. The wedding was for today, and I am awefully proud of it. Not only is it the first time for me to have ever done a square tiered cake (a challenge in itself) but it was also my first time doing a quilting pattern in the fondant on top of the cake. There are a few imperfections, but I did fix as many as I could towards the end. I'm pretty proud of it. So I decided to share.
I also wanted to share, because I was told by the person who ordered the cake from me (I will not name names, so we'll call this person "Maggie") that it was horrible, unprofessional, sloppy and unworth her time and what she had paid for it. I wouldn't mind hearing what others might say about my work, just so I know if maybe she was right and I should stop and not do wedding cakes any more of if this Maggie was just plain crazy...

I would, if I was that kind of person. Since I'm only just starting out, and I don't feel I'm up to par with the real professional, high quality, TV-worthy bakeries out there, I can't ask for more money for this particular project. I know for the future though, to increase my starting rate at the very least. XD lol
Ignore ...?Maggie? she was using you. This is a stunning cake the quilting pattern alone is brilliantly executed and considering it was a rush job she should be extreemly thankful that someone did it for her in the first place. Some brides need to pull their heads in.
You should be proud of this. *hugs* from yelleena

I love that quilting pattern!
So she underpaid and then told you it was awful?! What a...?!
Even if it were a bad looking cake (which its not), she went to someone new at doing cakes, paid less than the cost of materials and expected perfection. That's so wrong.
I do see imperfections, but it looks like those that come from rushing. Maggie is crazy and rude.
Eh. I know this is an older post. I got here through your newest cake posted on FACCC. Looks like you had a much better experience with that bride than this one. Keep it up and you can only improve!

Thank you for those kind words. It's nice to hear them, even though this nightmare of a cake is long over with.
Looking back at it, I can see a lot of mistakes I made, and I know now how to fix those mistakes or not make them in the future, so I guess one good thing that came out of this particular experience, was the experience I gained from it. Gotta find a silver lining somewhere. :)

Thank you! And actually, the quilting pattern is quite easy to do, it's just difficult to execute. X3 What I used was a ruler, and a little sewing wheel to mark on the fondant. The sewing wheel is supposed to be used for patterns or something to mark where you need to cut, or something...not quite sure what it's exact name is...bu it worked perfectly for what I was doing..so.. :P lol
You're welcome! That's so incredibly fascinating. I would've probably used a ruler with a pizza wheel and butchered the hell out of it. I'm not one for making cakes, but I might make one for my friend's wedding coming up with a small crowd and all for free. We'll see how that turns out (or maybe not)!
