An illustrative sumi-e ink piece of a bobcat. I've been playing around with a bunch of different styles of ink paintings, this one was for one of my generous donors from the Bees and Trees project!

In general no - rice paper is usually cheaper than say watercolor paper (handmade rice paper is more expensive than cheap junk watercolor paper, but handmade rice paper is less expensive than quality handmade wc paper, etc. - most of it is manufactured in china and things like practice rolls are much cheaper than 'finishing' paper for paintings you would save. It's very thin, much of it is like painting on tissue paper, and its very easy to destroy even with a paintbrush.
Ok I see why now. Being as hard to paint on as tissue paper and you still manging to make a beautiful painting on it just makes me respect you as an artist even more! I find it funny that you mentioned the fact it was made in China as if anything isnt made in China any more.
It is really relaxing to do! You have to be loose, free, and quick with it or it just ends up overworked and terrible. Since most of the art I make is really detailed and planned/graphic design type work, it's refreshing to work this way sometimes for a totally different flavor :)
