Before the Military Collectivization Act of 1920, the Rain Coast Republic ran several naval militia units. Most were small warships, but several were larger ships equipped for use as airship tenders.

Here we see a converted freighter designated NM-5, fitted with cranes and a mooring mast capable of handling the Air Militia's 'Nanaimo'-class armed airships. The 'Nanaimo' class were smaller than the Zeppelins currently in use in the USAAC and were dubbed "baby Zepps" by their crews and detractors. For their size, the 'Nanaimos' were heavily armed, carrying several heavy machine guns and two multi-rocket pods on outriggers located on either side of the control gondola.

When the Naval Militia became the Naval Syndicate in 1920, the NM-5 and her sisters were reclassified as airship carriers and given NSS pennant numbers. The 'Nanaimo' class underwent frequent modifications before finally being withdrawn from front-line service in 1960. They still serve in antisubmarine warfare and reconnaissance roles.
