I could provide a dozen quotes by Machiavelli on why relying on mercenaries is a bad idea, but from what I've seen the Wayward Inn doesn't have many people who could form a reliable militia.

Mercenaries can be un-trustworthy, but not if they were picked with the help of some psychic friends. Get a reading of someone's mind about their past and you know what they're like. It's even better when said psychic is also a very stealthy person. XD (Name cannot be disclosed as of yet. )
You're right though, the WDF pretty much handles any minor disputes that arise, but mainly defend the town's borders from any attackers (the few dumb ones who don't know who lives there) and the fierce wild animals that still roam my universe's Chakona.
