Froggy Update - Post Surgery
So, I just picked up Douglas from the vet and the surgery went great! Here you can see her with her numb ^^ She just ate a bit and is swimming around with no issues! She doesn't even seem to realize there isn't a leg there :P
She has two TINY stitches on her knee
Thanks to everyone who donated to make this possible!
*for those confused, she is a girl. We named her douglas after douglas adams before we knew she was a girl :P

I am glad the little gal is doing better. Those Pet chains..ugh..My Dad worked at a Petco for YEARS, but he is a reptiles, fish and exotics expert, he would have NEVER allowed anything like that to happen in the first place (meaning what the employee suggested when you called the store to report the issue, just read the journal)
He would have been SURE to place proper fish with the proper frogs and such to maintain a proper habitat. This is a guy who's salt water tank has formed it;s own ecosystem so fully he really doesn't have to touch it, and we have kept fish alive for upwards of 18 years.
I am SO sorry that the pet industry allows just anyone with little to no pet experience sell these lovely creatures. I STILL don't get why parents buy their children hamsters..but that's another soap box.
It is SO wonderful to see good loving animal/amphibian lovers out there willing to try and save the life of an animal instead of putting it down. and I am SO glad she is doing well.
I wish I would have been in on this from the beginning, I would have happily donated to help get her fixed up.
Good luck and well wishes to you and your little animal companions :)

It's good that she's alive and well, Reading that journal made me sick with what that lady from Petsmart said. I'm angry and saddened that someone would just say to bring her over to get put to sleep to just get a replacement. It's just disgusting and shows they really don't put much value into the lives of the pets they sell.
It's sad that the leg had to amputated but I'm happy for you that she's okay now and hope she's lives a long and happy life.

Wow, sounds like you had to go through something similar that I just went through with my ADF. I picked up two at a pet smart, and within a few days of getting them home one of them had developed an infection on it's front foot. We immediately isolated it to another tank and treated it with Pimafix and Melafix. While there was no visible wound, the limb was covered in white cottony growth. The growth halted but it was still clearly a useless limb. We just kept him/her isolated and treated with the pimafix and melafix until the limb dropped off at the joint of the elbow on it's own. A few months later and already the limb is GROWING BACK! You should keep an eye on Douglas to see if she will grow her leg back in time. We named our's "Tripod" after the incident, but resolved to change the name to "The Doctor" since the limb has started to re-grow.
Weird, I have only heard they do not regrow limbs. Also, the growth is called saprolegnia and cannot be treated by melafix or pimafix > < basically, when the fungus runs out of stuff to eat, it dies. Also, its is ALWAYS present in the tank, there is no way to get rid of saprolegnia permanently. It will also not attack healthy flesh as it needs an open wound to start with. We used f10 to treat douglas, its very deadly > >
Really, I am sticking to small pet chains from now on, petco and petsmart are just .... UCK
