the only time I used a blend was "gel layer" on shading dark parts of the hair, everything else was manual colors :(

It's still blended, though. Painter's abilities shine through when you actually leave brush strokes.

The point of painter is to simulate real media. You're going for a smooth, digital look so thats what you got.

Try using the round camel hair brush, I think its in the oil brushes, but I can't quite remember. Thats the one I used for my Painter 9 scenery paintings I posted on FA.
