This is a really fascinating and chilling look into the down fall of a man into insanity. It is not something I can accurately share without reading it out loud.
There are lessons to be learned by this piece. Its interesting that other than ONE imperfection, the killer of the story loved the old man, but yet was bothered by one small imperfection...the mans bad eye. So bothering was this imperfection that it drove the killer crazy to the point where he took an extreme unnecessary action to rid himself of the small imperfection out of his life...he killed someone he otherwise loved.
Sometimes we are guilty of that. We love our friends or family...but get so bothered by something that is, really a small thing and we lash out unnecessarily and what happens? We may not have been literally driven insane...but we often have killed a friendship...and over what? Us making a small thing that we should have let been said and forgotten if we felt it didn't apply to us, and in effect letting that small insignificant thing kill an otherwise good relationship...such as a friendship.
I also love how Poe explores at the very end the effects the conscience has on a person when its working. There is no greater punishment then the punishment the conscience give you...because its something that you can never run away and hide from.
BTW...You will probably see more of me reading poetry here and there. Its actually something I have always loved. But due to recent sad happenings...I thought the lessons of this one were much more...apropos...for my first posting.
Let me know of any poetry you would like to hear. I have a few on my list already...but I'm always up for suggestions.
