Reptile: Shade Animation
Well, what can I tell you about this here... ^^"
First of all, I always pride myself on how good I've become at drawing shading for my cartoon style drawings. But is it really true? Do I finally know how to shade properly? In fact, I wanted to be sure.
This animation shows an older drawing of "Reptile" (taken from my "Character Sheet 2011) and I have added eight different light sources circling around him! With each position of the light source, the shading on Reptile's body changes. I've started with a light source from behind his body and worked myself around him - clockwise.
The result: an animation of changing shades and light!
And though it might not be entirely perfect, I'm really proud how it turned out.
^___^
And yes... I think I know how to shade by now. But I won't stop practising!!

Oh, and I'm sure you'd like to have each single frame of this animaion in larger resolution? No problem, here are all frames for you:

NOTE:
Even if the circle with the little sun could resemble a clock, it's not meant to be one! As you can see, Reptile is NOT looking right at the watcher! His body is positioned to the lower left side (8 o'clock, if you want).

Personally, I love "step 3" the most:

Are you talking about this one?
The floor shading was kinda rubbish and quick, I admit. ^^" It's more a splat on the ground... but don't misunderstand one fact:
The circle may resemble a clock... but REPTILE is NOT (!!!!!!) looking at us. His body is positioned towards 8 o' clock, you see?
That made it all very difficult. I think it's better to talk about "steps" and not a clock.

Wow, that´s a good idea, using the GIF function to show how does the shading works in the source of light´s position.
That´s really amazing, seriously ^ ^ I wouldn´t stand for so long shading the same pic on different positions XD
I like the idea and the result looks very convincent, great work on this! :D

Oh now you're just showing off. *chuckles* Amazingly awesome job with this as always, I honestly think I could sit here and watch it for a very long time. But, then, I wouldn't be able to leave a comment now would I?
I'm not sure if you use a reference or not, or if it's just some many, many years of practice, but your shading has greatly improved over the years, as well as your art style as well. Every time you draw a new picture, you simply put... completely blow my mind. I think you should almost think about making one of those "How to Draw" books. I think that you would not only do a fine job of making a very detailed guide, but also probably sell quite a few of them.
Just an idea at the very least. And I really do greatly approve of the picture that you used for this exercise in shading madness! Reppy is just plain sexy and studly in any situation. Even when spinning around in circles for hours in front of a light source.
As always, keep up the phenomenal work!

I didn't want to appear arrogant... or to show off. ^^" Okay, maybe a little bit, hehehehe. Seriously, I just wanted to give it a try... a moving light source!! Woah.
I can truely say: this wasn't done with ANY reference, at all. No human model, no body reference, no light source for real... all of this is imagination.
Right now, I'm more or less able to imagine a light source (from every angle) and draw the shadings accordingly. But yes, this is because MANY years of practise... and I started this in the year 2009, I guess. Or was it 2008?
It took me about 3-4 years to get to THIS point... and I can still learn. And I will. ^_^
Thanks a lot for the large comment, that's highly appreciated.
Also, the idea of an "How to draw" book... hrhrhr, appealing!! ^_____^
At least, I got this "How to draw REPTILE'S head":
http://reptile-universum.de/reptile.....alschule1.html
And "How to draw scales":
http://reptile-universum.de/reptile.....20Tutorial.jpg
Maybe, this can be helpful to you, as well.
And maybe I'm going to do more "How to" stuff in the future... who knows! ^^
THANKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Oh you are certainly very well welcome Reppy. I always do my best to leave long, and well thought out comments. I think that it does a better job of conveying what I think or feel about a picture certainly, so I do always try and do my best with that certainly. :)
But you certainly should give some thought to a "How to" book. I think that it would do very well, especially with a little advertisement around this site. :)

This project here was mostly meant for Kevindragon... to show him (and anyone else) how shades behave when used a different light source.
It is not easy, yeah... but he (and many others) is using ALWAYS the same light source and highly FLAT shadings!!! I was really tired of talking about the benefits of a change in lighting... so I created THIS!
Art tells more than a million words, eh?
