Today I was delighted to receive a correspondence from my colleague and noted Lycanthropologist Diana Holt, Professor of Cryptozoology:
“Seamus, I hope this letter finds you well, and I’ll be happy to answer your inquiries:
“My Monstrumology classes are well received by the students, though the university seems unimpressed. They prefer to focus instead on less interesting sciences, such as chemistry and engineering. It’s hard enough for a woman to get a teaching position as is, let alone teaching my preferred subjects. Industry is what powers education these days, when it should be curiosity that drives the university. I fear that I may once again be looking for a new place to teach soon. It’s a shame, as I am quite fond of the forest that surrounds this particular school. There are plenty of deer here.
“Thank you for asking about my wellbeing. My Lycanthropic condition is not causing me too much grief these days, since my research has given me plenty of tools with which to handle my disability. I am so pleased that you read my paper on the subject; so few educated people show interest in the paranormal. It seems that I actually have better luck getting through to the lower classes who do not yet believe that cogs and steam have driven out the creatures that adhere to the rules of unknown sciences.
“As for the Supernatural Indicating Residue Detector, (Or SIR Detector) I will be happy to explain its workings in some small detail. You see, most supernatural creatures use forms of energy that are at this time not understood by man, however, the use of such energy does leave a certain amount of residue. The supernatural energies, and even the energetic residues are able to be absorbed by people or objects, and thus, can be detected with specialized equipment. The end of the probe is, of course, tipped with a quartz crystal. This is because crystals, particularly quartz crystals, are able to absorb this form of aetheric energy very well, and are thus able to channel energetic supernatural residue into silver wiring, which can then be converted into visible-spectrum light through the aetheric visualizer. The Aetheric Frequency Dial allows you to focus on a specific energetic frequency, since different paranormal influences have varying etheric signatures. And of course, the detection probe and box are made with ash wood to prevent paranormal interference (I have the good fortune of lacking the usual allergy to Ash wood, unlike most of my lycanthropic counterparts, so this does not bother me). And finally, the leather straps on the side allow it to be securely attached to a belt or bandoleer for easy transport. I do hope that clears it all up.
“In addition, your suggestion to join an airship is an intriguing one. However, I doubt I am well suited for the dirigible lifestyle. I am sure that after the first full moon, my welcome aboard any such vessel would be dubious, at best. Perhaps I can be an intermittent crewmember of an airship though.
“Many safe nights to you,
“~Professor Diana Holt”

So, I’ve been working on this Geiger-counter inspired thinger on on and off for a while XD It’s battery powered, and can be set to be sensitive to vibration and sound, or it can just be set into an ‘on’ position. It’s designed to be worn on a belt or bandoleer; however, it also fits into my leg pouch. While it is designed to be used two-handed, it can also be used one-handed (because sometimes, you need to have a gun in the other hand XD). It’s made from a wooden box, glows, has a spinning dial, and uses real quartz crystals. Yet another gadget for my steampunk persona!
