This is part of a set of illustrations that will be on sale during the Eurofurence 2012 charity auction. There will be five A4 high quality prints that will be framed depicting different gladiator classes. The charity auction will be happening on Thursday the 30th of August so keep an eye out!
This tiger is a dimachaerus, there are few written accounts of this class but they are said to be quite skilled and threatening.

If I recall right many ancient Western civ peoples werent that skilled in the use of dual swords (gladius in this case it looks like), most armies used sword/shield or spear/shield setups. So anyone who was skilled with using dual swords would be quite fierce and probably quite agile so the tiger makes sense here. I feel sorry that I cant go to EF here because I am in the states but love the theme of it as I did focus on Roman history here in high school at least.
I will need to look up and read more about it, thank goodness for Google scholar. From personal experience I do know it is a lot easier to use a shield and a weapon than two weapons. Very few cultures have ever developed two weapon fighting, most used the shield instead.
It is a shame you will not be able to come to EF, I hope I might be able to come to one of the American cons in the future.

I've always favored duel wielding over the stereotypical sword and shield form of melee combat. You gotta love the quick and agile ones.
Great work on these gladiators. I really like how you actually looked up the different kinds of gladiators and illustrated them with species they kinda matched up with.
