I had wanted to use an airbrush for a long while, but didn't want to spend the money either. Then someone randomly decided to give me one O.o
Its nice to use, but it also depends on what you're using it for. The one I'm using is only good for larger pictures, and doesn't spray finely enough for adding much detail. The scale "detail" on this was added after with a regular brush. But.. for smooth (photoshop-like!) shading, its really nice. If I had been painting in the shading with a regular brush, it would have also taken a hell of a lot longer than it did with the airbrush.

The problem with saying "Photo mutilated the colors" (other than the non-u spelling of 'colours') is that it implies the image should look EVEN BETTER... which is almost impossible.
Admittedly, your despair pictures (like the thing-in-a-box "Distortion Unit") are more my kinda thing (especially the anatomy. I mean... DAMN, those ribs and muscle details are... DAMN!)
Also, dragons ftw... or things that look like dragons at least. ^.-.^
