Artistic freedom is usually a very good thing. We all have to have our standards with our characters though, especially with people who would want to abuse them in any way. They are like our babies; our creative-mind babies. Although when you trust a artist to have fun, but not abuse, it's always a good thing. They will have a better time drawing, or what ever their art type may be, and you will get a better commission. I completely agree, freedom is amazing with art.
i agree wholeheartedly with that, i once did a commission of putting my character in a situation she never would put herself in, my mother was quick to volunteer me (it was her first convention) i explained to her later that i would have turned down the commssion and i had to explain why i was uncomfortable with it.
Oh wow, I've never let someone speak on my behalf when it comes to characters. Of course, no one has ever tried it either. You definitely need to have respect for the characters, both your own and others. When I do gift art for others, I never even decide what to do with them until I have researched them - including their personalities, and complete make up. Guessing it has something to do with manners, I wouldn't want to offend a could-be future commissioner or someone I would want to commission later. Most people have limits on what the can and will do.
