I'll explore this concept at some point, because seriously, I can't see Sonic bawwing long over that if it happened. Sure, it might actually slow him down permanently. But in my view he was never about speed so much as groove anyway, and he won't lose his groove because he loses his legs. He'd find a way to keep moving.

I don't think I'm gonna make it that easy. ;p More interesting if it changes his living conditions for real.
But then again, it would be interesting if he could reach decent speeds, but only with the obvious help of high-tech prosthetics. Going in line with at least the older outlines, Sonic doesn't like being dependent on anything, so that'd require some adjustment, too. :p

In the old comics there was a story about how he had to have his shoes to go that fast because he was burning his feet and getting cuts etc from the ground, so in a way he was already dependent on his shoes to ensure he could get that fast anyway. If tails just tells him it's a new pair of shoes he has to get used to in sure it could get his mind well enough.
I like that parallel! And the notion of Tails knowing how to present it for Sonic to be easier about it.
I've had trouble with the idea about the shoes though. I'm planning a fic and I wanted to use that, too; that Sonic needs special shoes to run. But the risk of injury would apply for his entire body - I haven't found a way to justify that he'd need shoes, but not a whole running suit, since dust in the air and grass and such would hit the rest of him too. >_0 (Conversely, if he can generate force fields to deflect things like dust, grass and bugs and, for instance, reduce friction between his own thighs so they don't get ground to hamburger, then the same ought to be true for his feet, and then I arrive at him not needing the shoes, either.)
Maybe I can make it credible that his feet would be the parts of his body taking more damage, for hitting the ground and being more at risk of cuts from grass etc, so that it would be too strenuous to maintain a strong enough shield on them.
