General comments:

Adapted from the original story from the Lafcadio Hearn book "Kwaidan."

"Akanuma" ("red marsh") has an alternate translation, "Akanu ma", which loosley translated means "the time of our happy reunion." So the poem that Mrs. Oshidori said could also be read as "At the comming of night I invited him to return to me. Now after that happy time to sleep alone in the rushes...." Such double meanings are a favorate of the Japanese.

When we see the ghost of the female duck, her kimono is folded right-over-left, as opposed the normal way of wearing it left-over-right (pg. 5). This was done on purpose. That manner of folding is reserved for the dead (or so I've been told), and it hints at the duck's own impending death.

On a personal note: I was almost finished with this comic when Tobie died, so personally, the ending (which hadn't deviated from what I had originally planned) took on a new meaning for me.
