I get really angry when I think about what BioWare did to the drell. Not just Thane, but the entire race in general. They gave no initiative to create new drell characters in their universe. They use TWO unique head sculpts in the ENTIRE series, ALL THREE of the drell--FOUR if you count the multiplayer ones, wear the exact same fucking outfits that are just recolors.. I mean... I just get so angry.
I get angry, because there is SO MUCH POTENTIAL in a race like this. The design possibilities are endless. And I hate that they squandered an opportunity to create a unique species unlike any that we have seen before. The closest being Salarians in their differences.
Asari are all varying shades of blue. With markings. A lot of which have the SAME markings.
Turians are all pretty much slate-colored, or some other kind of grayscale, with varying bits of colored saturation, and the only unique thing about them visually as far as color and identification are their face paint, and even then, they use a lot of the same markings over and over.
Salarians are the most unique species displayed in the series, at least from a design standpoint. Their skin tones range from warm colored oranges and bright reds to even greens or blues. They have unique eye colors, eye shapes, face shapes.. And they never play a large part in the story, spare Mordin. Who dies anyway.
And then the drell, who are lizards, who have ENDLESS color combinations-- Just look at Feron! They don't call him "rainbow drell" for nothing! He has reds, oranges, greens, blues, purples, all throughout him, and the only part of him we ever get to see is HIS FACE.
It just really really irks me that they didn't do more with this race. That they didn't PUSH themselves to create interesting, memorable characters.
Anyway..about this image..I just wanted to practice drawing drell, and giving them unique head shapes, so I don't get stuck having 'same face syndrome' with drell, because that is very, VERY easy to do. I tried long fringe, short fringe, pointed ridges, more rounded ridges, higher spines, lower spines etc. Each one I aimed to make different and unique as far as bone structure and the like.
Then to prove the above point, at how unique you can make a drell, I just googled images of lizards, picked 4 of the ones that looked most interesting to me, and colored their patterns based on those lizards.
Again. A wasted potential. And I hate it...
If you're interested in having one of these designs for one of your own personal characters (except the blue and black spotty one...I'm keeping him), please send me a note, and we'll work it out. I'm not asking for money for them, so don't worry about that. I just want to set some ground rules as far as crediting me goes. It wont be anything strict.. I just like to know where these designs are going to be used and what you plan on doing with them, is all.
