And yet, what is it about glass and steel you find offensive? Garr's commentary did not say that 'new' must be synonomous with 'bad' and that 'old' is connotated with 'good', only that things old and things new are both part and parcel of a grander more full tapestry. If one were to cross the gulfs of space and time and know the mind of the ancient babylonians the faithful might see the zigguraut and see it for its religious signifigance, the king for it's political prestige, but the man on the street watching it errected as he heads for his work group would most likely think the same of it as you do of the modern architecture: why do I need a temple of mud and stone when a grass and canvas hut has sufficed? There is beauty to be found in the modern for the person who can strip away the patina of arrogance that has been heaped upon it, but only once it has been so cleansed. It is all to easy to view that which is new and denounce it for an exterior appearance of cold emotionless functionality when we may not be the one for whom its artistry was intended. Shakespeare said "To thy own self be true", and if we are claiming that there is more truth in age than there is in youth, then we must also come to agree that to be true to oneself is to know oneself and ones place in and of existence, which means taking it for all its worth including those things we may not like.
It is the cold lifeless cage that bureaucracy and conformity represents, personified by featureless concrete, steel, and glass.
I don't refer to the graceful stone adorned with freezes and gargoyles that breathe with the landscape around it, no matter how tall or short. The beautifully constructed artistry one can sometimes find, even in sky reaching structures.
I refer to the unadorned structures in the core of a lifeless city. Those featureless cages of the heart and soul that serve to house the means to strangle individuality and dreams.
It is as much physical structures as it is the yoke of society's cannibalistic rulers that preside over the average soul and demand the conformity of soulless automatons.
I find it interesting that in times past, structures were made not just for practicality, but to display the strength, pride, and beauty of the human spirit and imagination. Now, these same buildings are being replaced by uniformity and lifelessness. No more are the dreams of man lifted up and displayed for all to see, but are buried in the depths of a dying heart wrapped in a cold unremarkable shell.
*chuckles* The two styles of construction, the featureless and uniform vs the graceful and decorated, are as much metaphors as they are real. They show how as the years go by, what was once treasured is now ignored: the individuality, dreams, and spirit of humanity. I never said that old = good and new = bad, merely observing how the past valued artistry and beauty, yet the present seems to ignore it, and how this attitude is reflected in modern construction.
There is value in new as well as old, but one must wonder: is new really for the betterment and benefit of humanity, or is new simply for the sake of itself? That is when we must truly decide if it is good or bad.

Thus, tainted
Are we
By order
By tranquility
By our own shelter
So sheltered were we
The Tainted
By our collective thoughts
Rules, rights
And orders
That we rotted
Kept from chaos
Discord
Un-order
Which had so dearly kept us
By sheltering us, we sheltered the world.
By sheltering the world, we have staved off chaos.
In this act, the chaos was pent up.
Now, in the time that draws near,
We face chaos like never before.
TOO MUCH CHAOS
I dare say that, soon,
There will be no more.
Are we

So sheltered were we
The Tainted
