Imperial Honours (Presentation of the Colours to the Imperia
I've been toying off and on for a few years now with a longish storyline involving a character, Buck Whitetail. The general gist of it is that in the mid-1980s, the Earth is peacefully conquered by a large, interstellar Empire. The inhabitants of what is now referred to as Sol III begin to volunteer for Imperial service, even though Sol III is generally regarded as a small, backward, frontier world populated by savages. I say "generally" because some close to the Empress see things in the Solian character that might well be highly useful to protect the throne.
Buck (a whitetail deer from Mississippi) is teamed with two subordinates, Jan Tyka (a Polish roe deer) and ffiona Quorn-Pytchley (an English vixen). All three of them serve in the Imperial Fleet. A number of other Solians are in the Imperial Infantry, such as Havildar-Major Singh. All of them are in the picture.
What eventually happens is that there is an attempted coup d'etat by a disaffected member of the Imperial Family, and the Empress is kidnapped. The plot is foiled directly by Whitetail, Tyka and Quorn-Pytchley, who rescue the Empress. In the meantime, a number of Solians managed to assemble on Domum, the Imperial residence planet, and storm the Citadel there, which contains the essential Imperial Regalia. (It's taken in one daring bayonet charge across level ground.)
The upshot is that the Solians are given a regiment of their own. Whitetail was badly injured in the rescue, though he survived (with skilled surgical help) and is sent into retirement with honours; the other two continue their careers. This is a still taken from the Imperial Broadcasting Corporation's coverage of the ceremony where the ISR received its colours from Her Imperial Majesty.

Heh. Heaven knows how many they actually have. I believe the Men At Arms series, which has about 480 volumes in total, must have at least 60 or so that are dedicated to the Napoleonic Wars, and that may well be a dramatic under-estimate. That doesn't even count all the battles outlined in the Campaign series, and the scattering of books in the Elite, Warrior and Battle Orders series. Now that I think of it, they have four volumes in MAA just on the *flags* of the Napoleonic Wars, and five on Napoleon's German allies. So call it maybe 120 just in MAA!
I think, overall, I probably have about 400 Osprey books, scattered among the different series.
