Because, really, if you had the ability to fly/float at will, wouldn't you use it as an invisible chair when reading?
My first actual lilchu commission, here we have Wizard Jay. Probably only the third time he's been drawn. I'd kind of like to do more with him at some point.

I actually have a wizard character in the book I'm working on who effectively only has one combat spell: a shield. Except that he's trained with it so much he's really good with it. To the point of being able to use it as a double-jump platform, or a push spell, or, as we see here, an emergency chair. :B
Coming up with unconventional ways to use magic in order to overcome your own limitations. Very intuitive. :)
And you just gave me an idea to use Time magic to achieve a similar effect.
Freeze time of a specific area, effectively "locking" matter (even air or water molecules) in place, which can then be used as a solid platform regardless of what materials it's made of.

It's more like he's applied himself differently. His knowledge of combat magic is limited, but his knowledge of theoretical magic is incredible. If you need someone to reverse a city-wide magical circle, he's your man. He's even figured out magical arrays that convert stray magic into electricity, not only insulating electronics from being shorted out by magic, but allowing them to be POWERED by it. Very useful thing.
It's also worth noting that he has been physically and psychologically traumatized by a spell that backfired on him when he was seven. Since magic is partially powered by self-confidence, he can mainly only focus on knowledge of magic and defensive spells, because attack spells make him nervous. He'll get over it eventually.

Are you stealing from my world? 0.o
A relatively small, secluded race of people in my world have done just that. The discovery and application of such technology has catapulted them to the top of the technological world. The rest of the world is still stuck at coal and oil, and magic is banned for religious reasons.
