Hali , I only saw him in passing at FAU. I didn't stay for the night and didn't catch his show. I can't remember if he was wearing shorts or not. Maybe he's not a shorts guy. When I see people with big radios at cons, I think they're con staff. I thought he was con staff. I knew that we had our own piano-guy but I never knew what he looked liked, even when I saw pictures of him because he looks like everyone else. "I have to get ready for the show and I need my keyboard," he said when talking to
bodak and then hurried off carrying a radio with a long antenna. "Oh you're the piano guy! I said as he walked away. He stopped with a bit of a stomp and turn around quickly.
"Yea, I AM the piano guy!" he said. He wasn't angry or anything. I think he was just surprised that someone would call him that.
"Oh cool! I heard about you from way back! I thought you were staff with that walkie-talkie," I said.
"This isn't a walkie talkie. It's a ham raido."
"Ham radio is still a THING?"
"Oh yea," he said with big eyes "it's just as big as it ever was. This thing," he waved his hand radio about like a whip antenna in an automated car wash, "reaches for miles!"
"Wow."
He talked to Bodak some more and that was that. I wonder what you talk about in Ham Radio. Do you talk to truckers? That's CB radio but is it the same as Ham? 1970's technology marches on.

With that particular handheld radio, I can actually talk to the astronauts on the ISS. I have talked via satellites. But mostly, we use the handheld radios for ski hills and cons. After all, those little bubble-pack FRS or GMRS radios at Mall*Wart only transmit at about half a watt. This thing can reach from one end of a ski hill to another with 5 full watts of power.
Makes for a much easier time coordinating with friends who are all in different panels, hotel rooms, or at the bar, too. ;)
